Are Microsoft’s App Store Games Coming to iOS?

The Concept of ‘Sideloading’

The concept of ‘sideloading’ as it pertains to the iPhone has long been a topic of discussion by Apple. In September last year, it was announced that the tech giant would be closing its operating system for smartphones due to the Digital Market Act (DMA for short).

This could soon allow device owners to install software from sources other than the official app store. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft is very interested in publishing its own app store on iOS.

Microsoft: Own App Store for Games

As reported by 9to5Mac, the Bloomberg report cited above indicates that Microsoft is planning its own app store for games for the iPhone operating system.

‘According to Phil Spencer, head of Xbox gaming division at Microsoft Corp., we are working with partners to launch a gaming business on mobile devices that aims to challenge Apple Inc.’s and Google’s dominant positions in the market. It’s an important part of our strategy and something we are actively working on today, not only on our own but also in conversation with other partners who may want more choices on how to make money with mobile.’

This is expected to happen in 2024. However, no specific date has been mentioned for a possible launch of the Microsoft App Store.

Collective Vision

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) of the European Union, which came into force on November 1, 2022, requires gatekeeper companies to open their services and platforms to other companies and developers.

Apple could be significantly impacted by DMA and may have to make major changes to the App Store, iMessage, FaceTime, Siri, and other services. The exact nature of these changes is not yet clear.

Nevertheless, it is probable that Apple will have to allow developers to offer payment platforms outside of their app and in-app purchases, at least (for now) in Europe.

Still, to be fully compliant with the DMA requirements, it seems more likely that Apple will support third-party app stores.

Microsoft App Store on iOS: What would change?

The App Store would continue to function almost as before. Thus, for most people, initially, not much would change.

However, if Microsoft were to launch its own app store, you could download the corresponding app through Apple’s App Store and decide in the future from which digital business to purchase software or a game.

The price could vary depending on the game or app. It is not improbable that third parties might offer developers lower commissions to bring their apps to the platform. This development could potentially benefit us buyers if developers pass on some of these savings.

Until now, Apple has charged commissions ranging between 15 and 30 percent for app sales or in-game payments.
