One of the most important news of the year we just left has to do with Netflix and its intention to continue using shared accounts. It is already an experiment they are doing in different countries, but as we already know, it will happen in a few weeks.
The Netflix account subscription expires in 2023
So far, Netflix is like a parent who knows their child is playing pranks but looks the other way and doesn’t pay much attention to it. The same was true for users. The accounts were separate, which was forbidden by the platform’s rules, but it was ignored. And so he did until the numbers stopped smiling at him. Those 200 lost users were a wake-up call, and from then on the platform focused on getting more value, meaning that each user had their account and did not share it as many have done so far.
Netflix has already announced in its quarterly report that 2023 is the year chosen to start a new strategy and end the party. However, it has been confirmed that the account-sharing limit will be implemented later this quarter after tests in other Latin American countries.
At the same time that Hastings resigned as CEO, the platform experienced growth, with more than 7.66 million users in the fourth quarter. This represents a total of 231 million subscribers and revenues of 32 billion. However, profit fell from 5.116 billion to 4.491 billion, a decline of 11%.
And with all these figures in place, they are always willing to leave the platform to use shared accounts. We have seen them take shape with the passing of the juncture, their marketing strategy has left a bitter taste in our mouths. More than 100 million households have shared accounts worldwide, according to Netflix, and that’s a lot of money.
As a result, the platform will take several steps in the first quarter to curb this practice. It is using the concept of “Netflix at home” and the goal is simply to prevent users who do not live in the main house from using the service with a shared password and without paying.
From on-screen indications to warn the user about the situation to the possibility of seeing which devices are using a Netflix account and in which countries these devices are located, revoking access to devices independently, transferring an existing Netflix user profile to a newly created account to keep its watch list or paying more to share an account with people outside your home.
We will have to see how these plans materialize, especially since there may be conflicts with users who travel and use their accounts at other points or people with second homes. In this sense, a verification system was established to change the home in case the users of the main house were traveling and the company made users who share accounts have to pay an “extra”.
How to see who uses your account?
- Go to the Netflix home page in your browser and log in.
- In the top right corner, you will see your account symbol. Hover your mouse over it and click “Account”.
- Scroll down and click on the “Recent device streaming activity” link.
- Then click on the “View recent account access” link.
