How to transfer WhatsApp chats from one device to another with the same operating system

WhatsApp stores chats on the cloud (Google Drive and iCloud) or locally on your device. The process of transferring chats and media files from one device to another with the same operating system is a quick and easy method. Are you ready to start?

Move WhatsApp messages from Android to Android

To move all your data from your old Android to the new one, there are multiple options: in this case, let’s see how to transfer Whatsapp chats using local backup and Google Drive.

Note: to not lose chats or multimedia files, ensure that your new Android is signed in to the same Google account as the previous one.

Method 1: transfer WhatsApp chats from local backup

In this procedure, let’s see how to trasfer Whatsapp chats from local backup, that is directly in the memory of your device. If you want to use a local backup, you’ll need to transfer the files to the new phone using a computer, file explorer or SD card.

Note: for the procedure to go smoothly, you need to use the same phone number on your two devices. Moreover, your phone will store up to the last seven days worth of local backup files, which will be automatically created every day at 2:00 AM and saved as a file in your phone.

Once you have verified all these requirements, we just have to start:

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Click on More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup
  3. If you want to include videos, press the button
  4. Finally, tap Back up to finish the process
  5. Download File Manager +, a file management system
  6. Open the app > Main Storage > WhatsApp > Databases or SD card > WhatsApp > Databases, depending on where the backup is saved.
    • If the folder is stored in the SD card: remove the card from the device and insert it in your new Android; then download WhatsApp and once the configuration has been completed, tap Restore.
    • If the folder is stored in the phone’s internal storage: rename the backup file you want to restore from msgstore-AAAA-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to a db.crypt12. Now, to transfer the backup to the new device, copy the file msgstore.db.crypt12 on your computer. Once done, connect your new Android phone to your Pc, download WhatsApp from the Google Play Store; in the File Manager + copy your file msgstore.db.crypt12 into Main Storage > WhatsApp > Databases. Finally, open WhatsApp, verify your number and once the configuration has been completed, tap Restore.

Method 2: transfer WhatsApp chats from Google Drive

The other method to transfer your WhatsApp chat history is to backup the conversations using Google Drive. We are talking about a file storage and synchronization service that allows users to store files on the cloud (presentations, spreadsheet, photos, documents or entire folders). To be able to backup on Google Drive, you must have enough storage on your device, an active Google account and a Wi-Fi connection (to reduce data usage on your Android).

Once you have verified all these requirements, let’s get starded!

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Click on More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Backup to Google Drive
  3. Select a backup frequency other than Never
  4. If you want to include videos, press the button
  5. Finally, tap Back up overto choose the network you want to use for backups.

Note: if you don’t have a Google account connected, tap Add account when prompted and enter your login credentials.

Next, you’ll need to restore this backup on your new phone:

  1. insert the old SIM card
  2. Set up your Google Account > Settings > Accounts and backup > Accounts > Add account
  3. Download WhatsApp from Play Store and then open the app
  4. Verify your number
  5. Once the configuration has been completed, tap Restore
  6. Finally, once the process has been completed, click on Next

Your chats will be displayed once initialization is complete; then, WhatsApp will begin restoring your media files. If you install WhatsApp without any prior backups from Google Drive, WhatsApp will automatically restore from your local backup file.

Move WhatsApp messages from iPhone to iPhone

Even in this case, there are several options to move WhatsApp chats from iPhone to iPhone: specifically, let’s see how to transfer all your data using iCloud and iTunes.

Method 1: transfer WhatsApp chats from iCloud backup

When you get a new phone, iCloud helps you get the most out of your tech and makes life just a little bit easier. We are talking about an Apple’s cloud-based storage that you can use to store and sync all your content in case something was to happen to your phone. Even in this case, you’ll just need to create a backup from your old phone and then restore it to your new one. Before you begin:

  • you must be signed in with the Apple ID you use to access iCloud
  • you must have iOS 9 or later and iCloud Drive must be turned on
  • there must be enough free space on both your iCloud and iPhone
  • make sure you have a Wi-Fi connection (to reduce data usage on your device)

Once you have verified all these requirements, let’s get starded:

  1. on your old iPhone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup

  4. Verify your number
  5. Finally, once the configuration has been completed, tap Restore your chat history to start the restoration of your chats and media from iCloud

iTunes is a media management software developed by Apple Inc. that allows users to play, manage and organize digital multimedia, on personal computers running the MacOS and Windows operating system. Moreover, iTunes helps you transfer WhatsApp chats from iPhone to iPhone. However, the application does not support selective backup, so you will need to make the entire backup of your device. 3. Identify your device, click on the phone icon in the iTunes platform
  4. In the left side of the screen, tap Summary and make sure to select This computer
