Interview with Daniele Bruttini, CEO of Quomi

Interview with Daniele Bruttini, CEO of Quomi, the first sustainable online-shopping platform.
Thanks to the pandemic period in which we have been living for a long time, online ordering has become a widespread custom in the habits of each of us. Among these new attitudes, there is of course that of online spending, where Quomi is inserted. It is the new sustainable online spending service.
What is Quomi
Quomi is a platform through which you can buy products with a big difference compared to competitors: at the center is placed the concept of sustainability. The products found on Quomi are made with fresh, seasonal and controlled ingredients; the packaging is always recyclable or compostable and the supply chain is short.
The products are chosen with great care through direct contact with Italian producers, so we speak of a short supply chain: the goods come fresh directly from the manufacturer, avoiding the waste of food in stock and shelves. Producers are carefully selected to ensure quality and sustainable cost to those who buy the Food Box on the platform.
Buying a Food Box on Quomi is very simple! Just register on the site to start a new cooking experience. You can choose whether to buy pre-packed Recipe Kits; boxes of seasonal fruits and vegetables; single products available from the many categories proposed.

Hello Daniele, nice to meet you and thank you for your time. Tell us more about this beautiful project.
Quomi is the company that brought Meal kits to Italy: a different way of shopping, where customers can choose their favorite recipes and receive at home all the ingredients, in the right doses, to cook them. If you choose Quomi, you can eat something different every week, knowing how to eat well with attention to quality and knowledge of raw materials and also reducing wastes.
How and when was the idea of Quomi born?
Quomi was born in Berlin, where I lived and where I met Andrea, co-founder. The need to find something different and new to prepare, following our Italian culture, gave us inspiration. We then identified a market opportunity and decided to become entrepreneurs.
How long did it take to shape the project?
From the moment we decided to dedicate ourselves full-time at Quomi, it took us 6 months to go online and sell the first box. We focused on putting on the site and the technological part, finding suppliers and logistics that supported us, and then we started creating the first recipes.
How are producers and users responding?
Quomi started in 2016: perhaps too early for the Italian market. Andrea and I came from international experiences and we thought that the Italian scenery was ready for a service like ours. During these years we have seen the ecosystem grow, with a demand that is more and more specific and suppliers, of raw materials and of logistic services, that have begun to evolve in our direction. The lockdowns linked to Covid were the spark that ignited a market that was ready to explode and in 2021 the trend was further confirmed.
Our planet is in distress. How important is it to create awareness about sustainability and how much technology can be useful in food education?
A diet that pays attention to sustainability is one of the keys to go in a direction that can be good for the planet. We truly believe in the slogan “Good for You, Good for the Planet”. For this reason our menus are built following the principles of the Mediterranean diet, universally recognized as one of the closest to the themes of sustainability.
How did you launch your project? Did you use crowdfunding campaigns?
No, when Quomi started in 2016 crowdfunding in Italy was still not ready. We raised capital through the business angels network.
Curiosity: do you also use Quomi to shop? Curiosity two: tell us the story of the planted tree?
I live now only thanks to Quomi. I have a personal box for every week and I no longer go to the supermarket! We are very attentive to sustainability and to try to compensate for the CO2 emitted by our service every time we send a box to our customers, we have closed an agreement with an American company that allows us to plant a tree. It’s a theme in which we believe a lot and we felt the need to do this !
