What is TikTok’s Artist Profile?

With over 70,000 artists already using its dedicated features, TikTok has proved to be fertile ground for making musical content go viral, for both emerging artists and big names in music. The platform’s popularity has prompted Spotify to experiment with video-based musical discovery feeds.

TikTok has introduced the Artist profile, a suite of tools dedicated to emerging musicians. But not only they can benefit from it: even established music stars can add an artist tag to their profiles, creating a specific tab for their music alongside videos, likes, and shared content.

To obtain the artist tag, TikTok requires at least four tracks to be uploaded onto the app. Artists can also pin one of their songs so that it appears first in their music tab. If a musician releases new content, the app will feature their songs as ‘new’ for up to 14 days before and up to 30 days after the release. Each new track will be automatically added to the music tab of the profile.

How Does TikTok’s Artist Profile Work?

The Artist profile gives artists the ability to curate their own profile in a way that increases visibility and discoverability of their musical creations. With the tag from artist, musicians can distinguish their music within the platform and make it easily accessible to fans.

In addition to the artist tag and the ability to pin a song to the top of the music tab, the Artist profile offers other useful features. Artists can, for example, add a biography that describes who they are and what they do, creating a more personal connection with their audience. They can also link their social media accounts and their official websites, allowing fans to follow them even outside of TikTok.

The Impact of TikTok on Music

The introduction of the Artist profile on TikTok is just the latest development that demonstrates the platform’s enormous impact on music. Thanks to the speed at which trends related to dances and lifestyles spread, TikTok has become a true launching pad for emerging artists and a promotional channel for big names in music.

The platform has shown its ability to generate authentic musical hits, turning tracks that might otherwise have remained unknown into viral phenomena. This has led Spotify and other streaming platforms to explore new forms of musical discovery based on video content.
