“Flipside” Instagram’s new option for creating a private parallel profile

January 30, 2024
Instagram recently introduced a new feature called “Flipside,” which offers users an alternative way to interact and share on the platform.
Flipside: a new profile option
After months of experimentation, Instagram has finally released the “Flipside” feature to a small group of users. This option allows users to create an alternative space on their profile, accessible only to selected connections.
Once created, the “Flipside” can be selected as a destination for one’s posts, limiting viewing only to those who have access to this space. You can visit and view the Flipside as an alternative profile gallery, where you can also add a new name and profile picture if you wish.
The evolution toward more private sharing
The creation of Flipside is another move by Instagram toward more private shares, a trend that is becoming more and more established in social media apps. Fewer and fewer people are posting content on their public feeds, preferring instead to maintain smaller, closer user communities. Instagram has noticed this shift in behavior and is trying to adapt to it.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said in 2022 that Instagram users were increasingly using stories and direct messages over posts in the main feed. As a result, Instagram introduced several features to encourage private interactions, such as Notes in the inbox, collaborative collections of posts that can be shared with specific users, and direct message channels where prominent users can be followed. Flipside represents a further evolution of these initiatives, allowing multiple profiles to be managed within the same app.
Flipside: A feature for younger users.
Flipside could be an option especially appreciated by younger Instagram users, a target audience the app wants to keep close, especially in the face of the growing popularity of TikTok and Snapchat. Notes have proven to be very popular among teens, and it could be the same for Flipside, offering another means for Instagram to foster interaction and follow trends.
However, at the moment Flipside is not yet available for all users and in all regions. We look forward to further updates on this feature and its impact on the Instagram community.
