The Young Berlusconi: an international co-production on Netflix

By auroraoddi

In recent years, Netflix has produced and distributed several highly successful documentary series. One of the upcoming releases is “The Young Berlusconi,” an international co-production that chronicles the rise to success of the well-known Italian politician and his television exploits. This three-part docuseries, produced by B&B Film in collaboration with Gebreuder Beetz Filmproduktion and ZDF Arte, will be available for streaming on Netflix starting April 11.

A critical reconstruction of the figure of Berlusconi

Unlike a simple hagiography, “The Young Berlusconi” offers a critical but non-judgmental reconstruction of Silvio Berlusconi‘s path to success. The series focuses on his early entrepreneurial experiences, from the invention of commercial television in the 1970s to the 1994 general election. During this period, Berlusconi had a significant impact on Italian television, redefining the rules of the medium and influencing national politics.

The creation of Milan 2 and television success

One of the focal points of the series is the creation of Milano 2, a residential neighborhood designed by Berlusconi in the 1970s. This project marks the beginning of his entrepreneurial success and the first introduction of coaxial cabling in Italy. Thanks to this innovation, Berlusconi launched TeleMilanoCavo, a television service for the residents of Milan 2. This was the foundation from which his television empire was born, overcoming the Rai monopoly and reaching a wide audience throughout Italy.

The impact of Berlusconi’s television on the national imagination.

In addition to his entrepreneurial success, Berlusconi’s contribution to Italian television redefined the national imagination. Through his television networks, Berlusconi introduced new genres and formats, such as telequizes, telenovelas, soap operas, American TV shows, and Japanese cartoons. This content entertained Italian audiences and helped create a new national imagination. Berlusconi’s communication also influenced the voting public, paving the way for politics.

The narrative structure of “The Young Berlusconi”

The documentary series “The Young Berlusconi” is developed without the use of a traditional narrative voice. Instead, it makes use of a select cast of witnesses, including Marcello Dell’Utri, Achille Occhetto and Jack Lang, who share unpublished anecdotes and confidences. In addition, the series includes partly unpublished or rare archive material, which enriches the narrative and offers a unique perspective on events.
