X introduces incognito mode control in Spaces

December 24, 2023
The popular social media company X recently introduced a new feature that allows Spaces hosts to decide whether or not to allow unregistered, private users to participate in their chats in the application.
This week, X added a new setting called “Allow incognito mode” to Spaces, which allows hosts to decide which users can participate in their audio discussions. As shown in the example shared by app researcher Radu Onescu, Spaces hosts can now enable this new option to allow anonymous users to participate in their chats or, if they prefer, restrict them to registered users only.
Incognito Mode for X’s Spaces.
The ability to participate in Spaces in incognito mode is similar to the option introduced in July to hide the verification sign, which seems to recognize the fact that some people see this verification as a negative sign, thus nullifying the concept of selling blue checkmarks initially intended.
With X‘s owner Elon Musk continuing to take divisive positions and associate himself with controversial figures, it makes sense that at least some of his fans might want to distance themselves from the platform, if only as a matter of perception. The same goes for Spaces chats. Recently, Musk participated in a discussion on Spaces with noted conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and controversial influencer Andrew Tate, a situation that many people might have wanted to hear but did not want others to know they were participating.
The need for Incognito Mode
Many users may not want to participate in Spaces chats in incognito mode, but it could be a useful feature to allow unregistered users to participate and for those who want to listen to potentially “spicy” discussions without wanting to be associated with their name.
The new control option grants Spaces hosts control over this anonymity mode. Currently, the setting is being tested with selected users, but may soon be available to all users.
The implications of Incognito Mode.
The introduction of an incognito mode in X’s Spaces raises several questions and considerations. For example, Elon Musk has even offered to pay the legal fees of anyone whose career suffers repercussions due to their activities on X. This further highlights some users’ concerns about using the app and underscores the need for an incognito mode to maximize engagement and ensure user privacy.
However, it is important to note that the introduction of incognito mode could also open the door to potential abuse and inappropriate behavior in X Spaces. Without the ability to identify anonymous users, it could be difficult to prevent and manage situations of trolling, hatred, or spreading false information. Therefore, X will need to consider implementing effective moderation tools to ensure that the Spaces remain a safe and respectful environment.
