YouTube tests advanced audience filters to improve retention

By auroraoddi

YouTube, the popular video sharing platform, is testing a new feature that will allow creators to analyze the retention of their videos based on different audience segmentations. This new option will provide additional information to better understand the specific audience behavior andengagement generated by different segments. In this article, we will explore the details of this new feature and how it could affect creators’ strategies.

The update to video retention filters

YouTube is introducing an update within its analytics section, called YouTube Studio, that will allow creators to view video retention broken down into different audience categories. According to YouTube expert Mario Joos, creators will be able to examine video retention based on the following filters:

  • Subscribers and non-subscribers
  • New and returning viewers
  • Organic and paid traffic

This breakdown will provide creators with additional tools to better understand how their audience is engaging with videos and which audience segments are responding best to the content. For example, creators will be able to assess whether videos promoted through paid advertising generate more engagement than those viewed by non-subscription viewers.

The testing and deployment of the option

Rene Ritchie, head of YouTube Creator Liaison, confirmed that this new option is currently being tested with a limited number of selected creators. However, it is expected that the option will soon be rolled out to all creators on YouTube Studio.

This new feature joins a series of analytics updates that YouTube has recently introduced to help creators improve the performance of their videos and take advantage of new opportunities. For example, YouTube has introduced better visualization of video earnings, product tag alerts, mobile uploads to YouTube Studio, and playlist analytics. In addition, YouTube is about to launch a new A/B testing option for video thumbnails, which will provide additional comparative performance information for better planning.

The importance of retention audiences for creator strategy

Retention audiences can play a significant role in a creator’s YouTube strategy. Understanding how various audience segments engage with videos can help creators optimize their content and create videos that better meet the preferences of different viewers.

For example, if a creator finds that subscribers respond positively to a particular type of content, he or she might focus on that type of video to increase subscriber engagement and encourage channel growth. Similarly, if a creator finds that videos promoted through paid advertising generate higher retention than organic traffic, it might consider investing more in ad campaigns to reach a wider audience.
