Texas companies behind Joe Biden’s AI calls in New Hampshire

February 9, 2024
It has been revealed that two Texas-based companies, Lingo Telecom and Life Corporation, were responsible for a campaign of automated calls withartificial intelligence that tried to convince New Hampshire voters not to vote. According to state Attorney General John Formella, authorities have issued cease and desist orders and issued subpoenas to both companies.
Both companies had previously been accused of conducting illegal investigations into automated calls. Lingo Telecom was charged by the FCC with “originating illegal traffic in automated calls.” The call campaign began on January 21 of this year, two days before the New Hampshire presidential primary, and an estimated 5,000 to 25,000 calls were made.
Joe Biden’s AI Automated Calls
Joe Biden ‘s AI automated calls were created using a voice replica of the president. Voters in New Hampshire received calls in which an “apparently deepfake” prerecorded message from the president was played advising potential Democratic voters not to vote in the upcoming primary election. The calls had been doctored to appear to be from the spouse of former New Hampshire Democratic Party official Kathy Sullivan.
Investigations by the Industry Traceback Group revealed that Lingo Telecom was the originating provider of the automated calls. Subsequently, Lingo revealed to investigators that Life Corporation was the company responsible for the calls and suspended service to it.
Allegations and investigation
New Hampshire authorities are investigating whether the AI automated calling campaign violated election and consumer protection laws. It has been reported that the two companies involved were previously accused of conducting illegal investigations into automated calls. The FCC issued a cease and desist order to Lingo Telecom, accusing it of “originating illegal automated call traffic.” Meanwhile, investigators are trying to confirm whether ElevenLabs, the company that suspended the account of Biden’s AI call creator, was actually involved in creating the software used to clone the president’s voice.
Ongoing research
The investigation into Joe Biden’s automated AI calls is still ongoing. Investigators are trying to confirm whether ElevenLabs was actually involved in creating the software used to clone the president’s voice. Meanwhile, New Hampshire’s attorney general is investigating possible violations of election and consumer protection laws. An estimated 5,000 to 25,000 calls were made during the campaign. The call monitoring company, Nomorobo, provided this estimate.
