Critically regarded as an abysmal failure when it was first launched in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV clearly wasn’t able to live up to the standard of excellence that (generally) designates the whole Final Fantasy franchise. Square Enix‘s new creation suffered from a great deal of shortcomings on basically all fronts; a horrible interface, unsatisfying performance, slowness in leveling up and clunky game mechanics were the main complaints that contributed to FFXIV’s demise in November 2012.

But this wasn’t the end of the game. With the lead of Naoki Yoshida, a new development team was able to masterfully fix the lacking and supposedly unfinished first version of FFXIV. Reborn from the ashes of the original as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, this 2013 title is a drastically improved product, that awarded FFXIV the status of one of the best MMORPGs of the last few years.

With over 24 million active users registered in October 2021, FFXIV is Square Enix’s most profitable game, and we can see why that is: apart from the major improvements we got gameplay-wise, the development team has been keeping players content through frequent updates and biannual expansion releases, these being Heavensward (2015), Stormblood (2017), Shadowbringers (2019) and Endwalker (2021).
