Three years after the launch of the famous and thrilling BBC/HBO series that premiered in 2019 and brought author Philip Pullman’s sprawling multiworld universe to the small screen, His Dark Materials is coming to an end. 

Thus, with the announcement of the third season, fans of the beloved tale of dust and demons whose fans can’t stop dreaming about the world created by Pullman and screenwriter Jack Thorne.


After the heartbreaking and tragic events of season 2, tensions in the multiverse are rising, and the cosmic battle between good and evil is nearing its end. Of course, fans of the show are eager to see how the escalation of the war will unfold. But that’s not all, because fans of the trilogy of novels are excited to see how the final chapter of the story comes to life.

When will His Dark Materials Season 3 release?

The third season of His Dark Materials will premiere in the United States on December 5, 2022, at 9:00 p. m. ET and 11:00 p. m. PT (UK), and you will be able to tune in on BBC One in the U.K. or on HBO Max in the U.S. However, the U.K. release date has not yet been released, so we will have to wait.

As a viewer, you understand the importance of continuity when watching a series. Therefore, many fans will be relieved to know that most of the main characters from His Dark Materials will be reprising their roles. 

So, Ruth Wilson will play Marisa Coulter once again, Ruta Gedmintas will reprise her role as the witch queen Serafina Pekkala, and James McAvoy will return as Lord Asriel Belacqua. 

Simone Curby, Will Keene, and Lin-Manuel Miranda will also return. Joe Tandberg will reprise his role as the armored bear Lorek, and most importantly, Dafne Keen (Lyra Belacqua) and Amir Wilson (Will Parry) will continue their journey.

There, we can see that the series will maintain the stunning visuals and dark, unnerving cinematic style that has previously earned positive reviews for the book adaptation.

Furthermore, despite the few minutes of the trailer, it hints at how the complex entanglement of the multiverse is approaching a point of cosmic collapse and dusty universal death, connecting the stories and heaping even more responsibility on the shoulders of the stories’ young heroes.

What will the show be about?

With all the details regarding the release date, cast, and trailer cleared up, all that’s left is to wonder what we can expect from the season 3 finale of HDM.

Well, the final episode will be based on Philip Pullman‘s The Amber Spyglass and promises to focus on Lord Asriel’s conflict with the Authority. which means we’ll see a lot more of James McAvoy this time around and how his plot threatens the Magisterium. It may provide commentary on his belief system as well as new information about Dust.

Meanwhile, Lyra and Will’s journey also appears to be more serious than ever, with the possibility of more tragedy ahead. Messing with death will probably have consequences, more specifically those foretold in the prophecy that everyone is very concerned about.

Nonetheless, beyond a couple of conclusions, we can’t deduce anything else, so we’ll have to wait and see which way things go. Whatever it is, though, it’s a given that we’re in for a wild ride and fans won’t want to miss Lyra and Will’s return to television.
