What is a VPN?
A VPN (a virtual private network) is a simple software designed to protect your online privacy and make life difficult for hackers by keeping your traffic and location anonymous. However, it can also be used for many other purposes, such as fast and secure browsing. After testing over 300 VPNs and reviewing all the VPNs they offer, we can honestly say that VPNs are so easy to use that anyone can use them.
This simple guide will teach you everything you need to know to start using a VPN:
How does it work?
A VPN redirects all Internet traffic through one of its servers, which is encrypted. For example, if you are in Spain and connected to a USA server, the VPN will send fully encrypted traffic from Spain to the USA. Your traffic is encrypted so that your ISP cannot track what you are doing on the Internet or track you or know where you are coming from. The server redirects your traffic to the website you are visiting. Instead of seeing your device as the source of traffic, the web sees VPN servers. Following the same logic, the VPN’s IP address is also displayed. The best VPNs use thousands of servers and change IP addresses so frequently that websites don’t have time to block them. Therefore, they remain anonymous and completely untraceable.
How does the VPN help?
In the discussion above, you probably imagined some situations in which a VPN connection would be useful. It is an open secret that they are especially important in corporate environments, but their use does not end there, these are the main uses of VPN connections. A VPN can protect you in several ways.
-
VPN encrypts all the data you send over the Internet
All your Internet traffic is encrypted when you connect to a VPN server. As a result, no one, not even your Internet Service Provider (ISP), can see what you are doing on the Internet. This also means that your ISP cannot limit your speed.
-
A VPN also protects your privacy
Websites and Internet services use your IP address to determine your location. When you connect to a VPN server, your IP address will not be visible.
-
Some VPNs block malicious websites, ads, and trackers
Malicious websites can unknowingly download malware and trackers to your device. A VPN with built-in protection prevents infection by blocking and blacklisting these sites before they can cause any harm, some VPNs also block ads and pop-ups to prevent malicious ads from infecting your device with malware.
