WhatsApp Improves Photo and Video Sharing

By auroraoddi

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, is currently implementing a new update for iOS users that allows the sharing of photos and videos on the platform without any compression, maintaining the original quality of the files. This update is particularly welcomed considering that WhatsApp has often been criticized for the low quality of transferred images, despite a previous update in August that improved the compression algorithm.

The Innovation within the Update

What is the secret of this new update? As mentioned earlier, multimedia files are not compressed under the duress. Instead, the update treats the multimedia files as normal data files. When you send one of these files, they are not transformed into previews for the chat window, but the recipient can click to view them. If you prefer, you can still send media in the traditional way, if you do not want to override the previews in the chat window.

It is important to underline that this change does not happen automatically. You must deliberately choose to send an image or a non-compressed video by clicking on the ‘paper clip’ icon to transfer a document. The rest is self-explanatory. WhatsApp states that this update will be released gradually, so it may take a couple of weeks before it arrives in your update box. Regarding Android, the company is working on it, according to what has been reported by MacRumors, but there is no information on the release yet.

The Numerous Innovations of WhatsApp

The year 2021 has been a year rich in innovations for WhatsApp, the messaging platform of Meta. Various interesting features have been introduced, like the app dedicated for Mac in August, allowing even video calls with a maximum of eight people. Additionally, a client for Windows was launched at the beginning of the year. WhatsApp is still testing stickers generated by artificial intelligence and self-destructing voice notes, which can make for a real adventure to Mission Impossible when asking for a vanilla ice cream.
