Now You Can Ask Bard Questions on YouTube Videos

November 26, 2023
Google has recently announced a significant update for its AI chatbot, Bard. Now, Bard is capable of responding to specific questions about YouTube videos. This new capability has been made possible thanks to the YouTube extension launched by Bard last September, which allowed it to analyze videos on the platform.
Before this update, the YouTube extension for Bard could only be used to locate specific videos, such as entertaining clips. Now, however, it is possible to ask specific queries about the content of the videos.
According to Google, ‘we are taking the first steps in Bard’s ability to understand YouTube videos‘. For example, if you are looking for videos on how to make an olive oil cake, you can now ask Bard how much olive oil is required in the recipe featured in the first video. This update has been introduced to satisfy users’ requests for a deeper engagement with YouTube videos and to allow for a richer conversation with Bard on this subject.
But what exactly does this update mean? It means that now, while watching a travel video and finding a location you’re very interested in, you can ask Bard where that place is. In other words, Bard becomes a virtual assistant that can provide specific answers about the content of YouTube videos.
Google Opens Bard to Teenagers Worldwide
Additionally, this update coincides with the access expansion of Bard to teenagers in nearly every country around the world. Google stated that teenagers can use Bard to ‘find inspiration, discover new hobbies, and solve daily problems‘. Teenagers can bring questions to Bard on important topics, such as which university to apply to, or on more entertaining subjects, such as learning a new sport.
This announcement is based on recent YouTube experiments with new generative AI functionalities. One of these is an AI conversation tool that answers queries about YouTube video content. This tool generates responses using advanced language models that combine information from YouTube and the web. Queries can be made during the viewing of a video, and the AI conversation unfolds in real-time. Another feature is a tool that summarizes the topics of a video’s comments, allowing users to get an overview of the most relevant discussions.
