YouTube Imposes AI Content Rules for Transparency

By auroraoddi

YouTube, one of the largest video sharing platforms in the world, has announced new rules concerning content generated by artificial intelligence (AI). According to the company, creators will now have to disclose if they have used generative artificial intelligence to create videos that appear realistic.

This new policy aims to ensure transparency and to protect the YouTube community. In this article, we’ll explore YouTube’s new AI content rules, the possible consequences for creators, and the measures adopted to counter manipulated content.

New Rules for AI Content

In a blog post published on Tuesday, YouTube highlighted the importance of revealing the use of artificial intelligence tools to create ‘altered or synthetic’ videos. According to the new rules, creators who do not disclose the use of such instruments could face sanctions, including the removal of their content or suspension from the revenue-sharing program of the platform.

YouTube recognizes the potential of generative artificial intelligence to foster creativity and enhance user experience, but at the same time underscores the importance of balancing such opportunities with the responsibility of protecting the YouTube community.

Expansion of Restrictions

The new rules introduced by YouTube expand on what was established by parent company Google in September 2023. On that occasion, Google had announced the obligation to apply a prominent warning on political publications on YouTube and other Google platforms that use artificial intelligence.

With the new rules coming into effect within the next year, content creators will have new options to indicate if they are publishing videos generated by artificial intelligence, which, for example, realistically portray events that never happened or show people saying or doing things that they have never actually done. This transparency is particularly important for content dealing with sensitive topics such as elections, conflicts, and public health crises or public figures.

Labeling of Manipulated Videos

Manipulated videos will be flagged with appropriate warnings, including prominent notices in the YouTube video player for sensitive topics. YouTube is also using artificial intelligence to identify content that violates its rules, and the company affirms that this technology has contributed to quickly identifying ‘new forms of abuse’.

Additionally, YouTube has modified its privacy complaint process, allowing requests for removal of AI-generated videos that simulate a recognizable person, including their appearance and voice. YouTube’s musical partners, such as record labels or distributors, can request the removal of AI-generated musical content that imitates an artist’s unique voice.
