What is a video capture device?

A video capture device is a device that receives information from a source outside our PC or laptop and encodes it as a digital signal before it is retransmitted or recorded on the latter. Technically, they are considered an input peripheral and can receive both analog and digital signals, depending on the capture device model.

  • Typical functions

A video capture device has two essential parts: a connection from the device to be recorded (analog or digital) to the capture device and another from the capture device itself to the PC. The type of cable used usually varies depending on the peripherals, since those that we consider “analog” often do not have USB or HDMI ports, using instead a variant such as RCA. At that moment, our computer decodes the signal, and it is either recorded or sent through the streaming platform we are using. In general, we can distinguish four functions:

  • Capture: we extract both audio and video in S-Video, RF, either with analog cable or digital video, HDMI or HD-SDI.
  • Record: we save sample activity in digital format compatible with any computer.
  • Transmit/streaming: we share our activity live with an audience thanks to a specific platform.
  • Encode: take our recording and convert it to a different format, such as the highly compressed H.264 video codec.

What is a screenshot?

A screenshot is a digital photo of the content that is visibly displayed on the screen and, by default, saved as a file on the clipboard or in the screenshots’ folder.

They are also a convenient way to save processes, errors or system messages on the computer or game consoles, document them and share them with other users. A screenshot is a snapshot of the entire screen or a part of it.
