Sunlight and its benefits to the sea

By dayannastefanny

As part of a wave of research into solar water purifiers, a team of scientists claims they can even turn brackish groundwater into fresh drinking water in about 30 minutes. The filtration uses a metal-organic framework, or MOF, which is a highly porous polymer made by combining metal particles with “coordinated” organic pieces called ligands. It can be used in the sun, making it ideal for many in situ applications near brackish water sources.

This new MOF material is charged by the sun for a few minutes, which resets the structure of the charged ions in the material, preparing them to absorb salt and other particles from the brackish water. A MOF has a structure like that of chamois or even the foam often used in flower shops, with one of the highest surface area ratios of any known material. Particles are attracted to and absorbed by the MOF. Then, under the influence of the sun, the material “releases” the trapped salt.

The term “saltwater” can describe anything from slightly salty water to Dead Sea water, but salt water is a term that describes most of the dissolved solids between freshwater and salt and seawater. This includes most groundwater, many rivers, and other freshwater bodies, and even seawater that has undergone some form of seepage. Brackish water is often referred to as “gray water” in nature when the term “home remedies” is used: For example, an ice chest is good, but not safe to use.

In their study, the researchers took brackish water samples that showed more than 2000 parts per million (PPM) of pollution and debris in the form of dissolved solids. Half an hour later, the PPM value dropped below 500, which is the definition of “clean water.” The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that sea salt typically hovers around 3.5%, which is 35 parts per thousand or 35,000 parts per million.

How is it possible that this MOF ionic sponge attracts only impurities?

The molar masses of sodium and chloride, the ions that make up most of the sea salt, are 20 and 30, respectively, compared to water, which is only 18.

Why sunlight?

The researchers created a MOF they named PSP-MIL-53. This MOF was synthesized by immersing spirogyra acrylate (PSP) into the pores of MIL-53, whose advantages lie in its respiratory labels and transitions over the adsorption of molecules such as broth and carbon dioxide. Adsorption is the seeming by which molecules or ions of a locus are attracted to or retained in a solid coating.

Huanting Wang, dissertator and caudate essayist of this survey published Aug. 10 in the scientific comedy Nature Sustainability said: “Gasification thermal desalination processes consume a lot of enhancement and other technologies, such as reverse flow, have several drawbacks, including a prosperous consumption of enhancement and use of chemicals in hoe and membrane devilment.”
