Does the term mobile photography sound familiar to you? If it doesnt, dont panic. This concept was coined just a few years ago. It wasnt just until the beginning of the 10’s decade that iPhone users realized that their smartphone was the best camera they could have, because you carry it all the time with you. Moreover, it enables you to capture any moment, wherever you are, at any time. This is when mobile photography was started and also started getting attention from even professional photographers around the globe. A couple of years later, Android cell phones developers and manufacturers like Samsung and Huaweii kicked off including their phones in the game.

The world of mobile photography today

Furthermore, the chance to show your photos to the world through digital platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Flickr was what really boosted and emerged this genre to the mainstream.

Nowadays, Boomerang, filters and animations are just a few of the innumerable possibilities Instagram offers you to capture whatever you want to. Top 100 Billboard singers, artists and filmmakers have their iPhone as their main tool to make takes for their clips and films.

Smartphones have brought a countless amount of photographic tools that you can use to make possible any sort of idea. From shooting films and video clips to snapping an authentique building that you bump into while you are commuting, are just a few things you can make possible with your phones camera.

In this article, we are not going to discuss Android vs iPhone whats the best for mobile photography. Instead, we are going to break down 8 tips on how to use the full potential of your smartphone (no matter if you are an Android or iOS user) to start killing it in mobile photography.

Tip #1 Get perspectives that people often ignore or dont see

Tip number one might sound like the typical advice given in a basic photography course. If you type on Instagram the hashtag #photography, there are going to show up hundreds of thousands of pics from amateur to professional performers in this area. And also you might notice that a bunch of photos are or look the same: the same landscape, the same perspective, the same colors or even the same object. What it is actually going to demonstrate that work is unique is the way you capture an object.

Two photographers can both take a picture of a fruit bowl, but they both have two different points of view and that is what is going to stand out one photographers work from the other one. When you are going to shoot your subject in matter, think about all the different views from where you can capture it. Play with your camera, try to take a point on your subject in which the human eye does not typically interact.

Tip #2 Get low and get close

What this tip means is that being as low and close as possible to the subject you are shooting is the best way to fully use your smartphones camera. Nowadays, smartphones cameras are built and designed to detect any small detail.

As we have explained in tip number one, perspective really matters in fact, so getting as close as possible to the ground and playing with the focus to detect all the small details of your subject is a way of shooting from a different point of view. So, get low to the ground, focus as close as possible and snap your shot to capture those details no one else is paying attention to.

Tip #3 Apply the Rule of Thirds

You might have seen that grid that has those lines intersecting at different points on the screen. In fact, this grid was designed to help you frame a shot. The rule of thirds consists in breaking any image that you want to shoot into thirds horizontally and vertically, consequently you will have nine equal parts. Within the grid, the lines intersect at four different points, these are your 4 main points of interest. This rule states that if you place the subject in the top, bottom, left or right sections of the grid, you will shoot a perfect picture.

Tip #4 Spend Time Scouting Locations

Walk around your neighborhood, walk around those places where you usually do not pass by. You will find a new spot where you can snap a shoot at an interesting object you have not seen before.

Tip #5 Go to a high point

If you live in the city you can go to a building that seems interesting to you and capture a panoramic shoot of a landscape. If you live in the country, it might be a bit difficult to find a high place, but there is always a spot high enough to take pictures from. Use the previous tip and try to catch an object while on top of something to get an entire background out of focus to focus an object in specific.

Tip #6 Test multiple angles

Take your phone and go around a subject and watch it from different angles. This will give you different views that you did not even think about using. Looking at the subject from different viewpoints will give you different results. So, go and circle around or go to the top of the subject and look at it. These might give a better idea than the one you had in mind.

Tip #7 Do not forget to turn your phone around

Some phones have the camera at the top center, which means that if you turn it around the result will be the same. However, if your phone has the camera on one side, turning it around or just flipping it can be a good option when trying to snap a shot. Sometimes you are trying to take a picture of a subject and it does not look as you want it to, if you flip the phone over you will have a better close up at the object.

Tip #8 Editing is your best ally

After you that shoot that you finally wanted, it might look like there is something missing or a detail out of focus. You can fix that with a good editing software. The one that we highly recommend you in this article is Snapseed, it is a professional photo editor developed by Google which offers you an unique interface and an incredible variety of filters, effects and photo-editing tools. This app will definitely be your best friend when it is about editing and outlining details.
