Interview with EMCC Senior Practitioner, Executive Coach and Business Mentor Rosanna Blasi.

We’re glad to have Rosanna Blasi as our guest today: she’s an Executive Coach and Business Mentor who gained a lot of experience while working for big multinational companies, such as LinkedIn.

Rosanna Blasi started her life journey in Apulia. After getting her master’s degree and having worked for 4 years in the Recruitment industry in Modena and Milan, her journey brought her to London, where she started working as sales and strategic consultant for Gartner, one of the most important companies in the IT field.

After two years, in 2014, Rosanna moved to Dublin and joined LinkedIn where she spent 5 years working for Italian and Spanish companies. First she was supporting Italian Smb’s with their recruiting and employer branding strategies. After this experience, Rosanna crossed paths with big Telco and Banking companies, and started to work to promote her clients’ digital sales strategy. While she was working in LinkedIn, she decided to get her Master’s degree in Executive and Business Coaching and her life took an even more exciting turn. In 2019, coming back from a 5 month intercontinental trip, Barcelona became the place where her idea flourished: putting her knowledge and expertise at the service of other people.

This is Rosanna Blasi’s origin story as a renowned Coaching and Mentor in the professional growth and leadership field. Today, Rosanna helps business owners discover their strengths through consulting services and workshops.

She also offers 1’o’1 personal coaching to leadership group programs, adapting to clients’ needs in the creation of personalised. Hello Rosanna, first of all, thank you for your time. It’s so nice getting to know you! Now, can you tell us what it means to be an Executive Coach and Business Mentor?

Hello Germana, and thank you for your introduction. Being an Executive Coach and Business Mentor means to help my clients answer three questions about their life and professional projects: 1. “What’s most important to me?”, 2. “What am I doing to achieve it?” and 3. “Am I doing the right things to live in alignment with my priorities?”.

On your Instagram profile there’s a post saying “It’s time to shine”. Do you think that it is difficult to live a life true to yourself while you are to be successful in your professional life?

Well, if you’re able to express your personal qualities in your job, and your professional goals are aligned with your personal values, then these two dimensions – personal and professional – merge. On the other side, we tend to lose sight and sense of purpose when we put our focus on external validation. In the majority of the cases in our culture, we’ve been told what is right or wrong, what you should do in order to be successful and acceptable. Then your sense of worth is based on external concepts that do not resonate with yourself. So, I want to ask our readers: does your job represent who you are? Do you fully express yourself?

In our conversation you mentioned that “losing yourself” was key in bringing you where you are now and helping you to create your business project. What does it mean? And why is it so important for a business owner to go through this process?

“Losing myself” means to completely explore and navigate my vulnerability. In the past, I’ve always tried to take moderate risks to fall on my feet without hurting myself too much. This didn’t allow me to give it my 100%. I was striving for perfection in everything I was doing, but that’s just unrealistic. When I started facing my own fears, I became more aware about myself, and I had the courage to take very hard decisions. When we learn to embrace our fears, they lose power on us, and we discover that we are able to navigate through tough times. Accepting your vulnerability means to lose your fears. Then you feel that you are strong enough to take bigger risks, because you don’t fear failure. This is at the core of an entrepreneurial attitude.

Since you’ve met different cultures and methods during your career, can you tell us about the importance of going abroad for a young person’s professional path? 

Different people, cultures and work methodology make us understand how our solutions are not the absolute best. Our upbringing shapes the way we see reality, but we can use “alternative” methods that could also help us discover something new about ourselves. Diversity paves the way to the implementation of brand-new professional choices. Maybe “going abroad” is not even necessary: we can still learn something new everywhere we go. Going abroad might only speed up this process.

In regards to the “inner self”: do you think that working for big companies such as LinkedIn is an advantage or a requirement for one’s personal growth?

Definitely an advantage. I’m truly grateful to Gartner and LinkedIn, especially the latter, because this company made me realize what “personal achievement” really means to me. Knowing about “what’s most important to me” helped me conciliate my career and my personal growth. I feel true to myself because my professional mission is aligned with my wishes and values.

What are the main obstacles an entrepreneur can’t overcome by themselves?

It really depends on the individual’s previous experiences. In the mentoring and coaching journey with me, the business owner starts from structuring their business plan and we focus on how to turn an idea into reality and make it profitable). But we also deal with the entrepreneur’s personal limiting beliefs, which could drastically reduce the business’ growth potential. 

Some people call Business Coaches “useless” and “unnecessary”: what would you say about that?

I’d be glad to know that these people already have all the means necessary to reach their goals. Business Coaching is a misunderstood concept because it’s relatively new, but the industry is truly taking off now since the idea of being the best version of yourself in every facet of life is becoming a necessity. Coaching is all about working on your weak spots and facing your own fears. If there’s no work on personal growth and self-awareness, then we cannot talk about coaching. 

It is ok to feel skeptical towards things we don’t know. I tend to approach them with an attitude of curiosity. I take information from reliable sources and I see if I can confirm my hypothesis or I need to change my mind. Only then I can decide how to proceed.
