It’s a-me, Mario!: All the movie details here

As you read, a film adaptation of one of the story’s most acclaimed Nintendo games will finally be released. The past October 6th, 2022, Nintendo ran out their main event Nintendo Direct, the perfect opportunity to talk about Super Mario Bros. Movie. Actually, the company decided to completely focus on that.

That day, the first Mario Movie Trailer made its debut, and the broadcast included other news and updates around the film. So, contrary to what they usually present, Nintendo didn’t make any game announcements. However, don’t feel sad, they have another kind of plan for gamers. If you want to know, click here. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at everything we know so far about the new movie.

Everything you need to know about Mario Movie, let’s-a go!

Movie Trailer

The first official trailer of Mario gave us a first glance of the classic universe of our moustached hero, making a clear reference of a new adventure in which he’ll have to embark to reach the Mushroom Castle.

On the other hand, the movie will be produced by Illumination, the same label that was in charge of highly recognized animations such as Minions and Despicable Me. Furthermore, it has a great production team composed by: its directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who previously collaborated on the Teen Titans Go animated films, the screenwriter of The Lego Movie 2 and Minions: The Rise of Gru, Matthew Fogel in charge of the script, produced by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, and Chris Meledandri of Illumination

Certainly, there’s no concrete information about the official plot. However, in the trailers so far released, we can see a plumber Mario having what seems to be the first contact with the Mushrrom King. At the same time, we can see Bowser collecting a Super Star, which might be a race to prevent him from finding them all.

Thus, from the longer trailer, we can see that Mario will help (as usual) the kingdom to fight Bowser. Although this time, the Princess Peach is not the typical damsel in distress we used to know and instead, she’ll have an active role to play, as do side characters like Luigi and Donkey Kong.

It also looks like we’ll get at least one part that nods clearly at Mario’s side-scrolling platforming days, along with a moment where he uses the Tanooki Suit and Fire Flowers. Lastly, with a section of the full trailer featuring a host of Mario Kart rides in action on Rainbow Road, we wonder if this is a glimpse at the movie’s final act.

Nintendo got plenty of attention for its cast announcements around the movie in 2021, with a host of voice actors confirmed for the film. The most attention went to the central casting of Chris Pratt as Mario, which attracted some criticism due to how many movies the leading man has been in.

But hey, it was only a matter of time before the fans got used to it and started to accept that he could be a decent fit after all. Other fun bits of casting include Jack Black as an irrepressible Bowser and megastar Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. And if you’re still curious about the complete cast, here is a list of the confirmed members:

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
  • Charlie Day as Luigi
  • Jack Black will be playing Bowser
  • Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
  • Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
  • Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
  • Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike

Release Date 2023

The Super Mario Bros Film will release on 7 April 2023 in the United States and on 28 April 2023 in Japan. If you too grew up in the 90s and do not know the value of ‘Super Mario’, this cannot happen.

For many, it is incredible that the game that made Nintendo completely famous—the same game that we used to play on our TVs and that we used to take to the princess—will finally have an animated movie. Are you ready?
