PS Plus Free/Essential Games for January 2023

By Valentina Tuta

Currently, the free PlayStation Plus games coming to Sony’s subscription service in the first week of January 2023 have been leaked. Thus, we finally have the trio of titles, headed by a very expected sequel of Star Wars, a controversial title from Bethesda and a Metroidvania-type game. However, let’s see what to expect with these games and what they’re about.

PS Plus Free Games for January 2023 that are available now

For January 2023, it seems Sony has decided for the selection of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fallout 76, and Axiom Verge 2 to please subscribers of its service. By the moment, we know these games are available now and if you’re a fan, you will have until early next month to claim them. So, let’s get to know the details about these titles.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (PS5/PS4)

Okay, the first and most anticipated from this list is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. A game that does not necessarily need an introduction because it belongs to one of the most famous IPs in popular culture.

Moreover, the fans agree this is a good time to pick it up for the first time or revisit it, as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s release date is only a couple of months away, and gamers have a lot to learn over the coming months.

Fallen Order was developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts and is already having a huge success in terms of sales, with over 10 million copies apparently sold in under six months from launch.

Axiom Verge 2 (PS5/PS4)

The next game couldn’t be as recognizable as its counterparts. Nonetheless, it’s a solid game with a “Strong” OpenCritic Rating. In fact, its Top Critic Average is 78, while 76% of critics recommend the title. Axiom Verge 2 is a Metroidvania game where players take on the role of billionaire Indra Chaudhari, who must go to Antarctica to find her missing daughter.

The title was developed by Thomas Happ Games and it only came to the PlayStation 5 in August 2022, although PS4 owners have been able to enjoy the side-scrolling mix of adventure and exploration since August 2021.

Fallout 76 (PS4)

Finally, we have the controversial pick for January’s free PlayStation Plus subscription. As you can see, it’s a game which was initially released in 2018. Although, at that moment, it was torn apart by reviewers upon release for numerous reasons.

First of all, it gained a lot of critics due to its title having been seemingly rushed to meet its scheduled release date as well as having premium features (pay-to-win), and to top it all, the experts said it was just a bit boring in general.

But don’t you worry, it has since bounced back by a ton, what’s more, its updates have improved Fallout 76 and its tarnished reputation, and it might be a worthy addition to this list for those who aren’t so excited with the Star Wars universe and if someone hasn’t yet decided to give it a chance before, now may be the best time.

You know, at least playing Fallout 76 for free ahead of Bethesda’s new upcoming game, Starfield, will show just how much BGS has grown in the past couple of years. Would you give it a chance?
